A sign about early settlers

Our History

The house was built in 1810 by Frenchman Joseph Juliand. He was born in 1749 in Lyon, France and pursued a career on the sea making several trans-Atlantic trips. During a stay in New Haven, Connecticut, Joseph met and married Hannah Lindsley. In 1796, upon hearing of the French settlement and being solicited to do so, the Juliands, along with their two children, left Connecticut for the then-named town of Hornby in upstate New York. Juliand was given a 300 acre land grant from New York State in 1797 where the twenty-two room house sits today. It is constructed of great hill pine with wide, thick floorboards that are as solid today as when the house was built.

This historical treasure boasts several legends from Indians sleeping in the center hall to being a stop on the underground railroad in the 1860's. It is a well known landmark in the community of Greene, New York.
